Job Description

Role Overview
The Technical Lead will be responsible for leading the design, development, and implementation of enterprise-grade applications using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, SQL/RDBMS, and cloud (Azure) technologies. The role includes ownership of technical architecture, hands-on development, ensuring secure coding practices, implementing DevOps principles, and contributing to BPMN workflow solutions using Camunda or Activiti.
This position requires strong leadership, deep technical proficiency, and the ability to drive engineering excellence within cross‑functional teams.

Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Leadership
• Lead and mentor a team of engineers across design, coding, code reviews, and architecture.
• Provide technical direction on application development, system design, integration, and performance optimization.
• Ensure adherence to coding best practices, security guidelines, architecture standards, and DevOps processes.
2. Application Design & Development
• Design and develop enterprise-scale applications using Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices architecture.
• Implement cloud-ready, scalable, and secure RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Apply microservices design patterns such as Circuit Breaker, API Gateway, Saga, CQRS, Strangler, Event Sourcing, etc.
• Create reusable components and standardized patterns for application teams.
3. Database Design & Optimization
• Design normalized relational database schemas using SQL and RDBMS (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.).
• Optimize queries, indexes, and stored procedures for high-performance applications.
• Ensure effective data modeling and integration.
4. Cloud Engineering (AWS Exposure)
• Work with cloud-native components, deployment models, scaling strategies, and cloud networking concepts.
5. DevOps & CI/CD Integration
• Collaborate closely with DevOps teams to build, enhance, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines.
• Promote automation for builds, deployments, testing, and monitoring.
• Support containerization (Docker) and orchestration exposure (Kubernetes preferred).
6. Secure Application Development
• Enforce secure coding standards such as OWASP Top 10, API security, token-based authentication, and encryption.
• Conduct security code reviews and vulnerability assessments.
• Ensure compliance with enterprise security guidelines.

7. GenAI Code Assist & Modern Engineering
• Leverage Generative AI tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT-based coding aids, or similar) to improve productivity.
• Promote modern engineering practices like TDD/BDD, clean code, and automated quality gates.
Required Technical Skills
Core Skills
• Strong experience with Java (8/11/17)
• Expertise in Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, REST APIs
• Hands-on with Microservices design patterns
• Strong SQL, RDBMS (MySQL/PostgreSQL)
• Cloud exposure: AWS
• Experience in DevOps practices & CI/CD pipelines
• Secure development practices (JWT, OAuth2, OWASP)
• BPMN workflow tools: Camunda or Activiti
Additional Good-to-Have Skills
• Experience with Docker / Kubernetes
• Exposure to messaging technologies (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
• Knowledge of caching (Redis, Hazelcast)
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code concepts
• Knowledge of API Gateway concepts
• Experience with monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
Professional Experience
• 10-15 years of hands-on experience in enterprise application development.
• Minimum 3+ years in a technical lead or senior engineer role.
• Proven experience leading end-to-end application development cycles.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.

• Ability to mentor team members and drive technical discussions.

• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Availability

The candidate should be open to working with a few hours of overlap with New Zealand, which would involve starting work early in the day by 7 AM.
